NEWS  August 21, 2006    Turning Stone Classic VII – Archer keeps going on the winning streak

Sambajon - Dipp - Archer

Only 10 days after his triumph at the Challenge of Champions, Johnny Archer (USA) could once more display his current, excellent form and win the Turning Stone Classic VII. In the final, he upset the so far undefeated Philippine player Santos Sambajon jr. 13-9. In the final of the winners bracket, the US player had lost to the Philippine player 5-9, but Archer came back winning the semi-final of the losers bracket against his fellow countryman Shawn Putnam 9-3 and in the final, he was in much better shape. However, it was a slow match which lasted until 1h00 a.m., but some 100 patient spectators were still there to see the last 9 ball fall. The Turning Stone Casino and Hotel was once more the ideal venue for Mike Zuglan’s Joss Northeast Tour Final and is already booked next year’s stop in February 2007.

For me, the tournament was not too successful. Even if I could win my opening match against US player Al McGuane 9-0, I was already stopped in round 2. After a good start and an early 2-0 lead against James Roberts (USA), I made a heavy and unnecessary foul in rack 3. even if I managed to keep the lead until 6-4, a black break turned the match around. With 5 shots, my opponent won 3 racks and made me commit two more major mistakes. After the 7-9 defeat, I had to go to the losers bracket at a very early stage. I won my first match in the losers bracket against Jim Forsythe (USA) 9-2 without any problem. The next morning, we started by 10h00 a.m. I knew my opponent Adam Smith (USA) from the last Turning Stone Classic. But this time, I could not keep my form and lost again, in spite of a 6-4 lead. I lost 6-9 and had to travel home with a frustrating 33rd rank in my suitcase.
