At the 5th Pyramid
World Championships in the Olympic Hall in Moscow / RUS, a 64 players
bracket was played in KO format. My opponent was a player from Belarus and
at least I managed to challenge him a bit while losing 3-5. He managed to
enter the next round but then also had to quit the tournament.
The new World Champion is K. Sagyndykov from Kazakhstan, who upset in the
final O. Machtakov from Ukraine 7-4. The 21 year old player won, after the
European title a few months ago, now also the World title and this for the
second time in 5 years of World Championships in the Russian Pyramid.
Defending champion Y. Vinokur (UKR) lost at an early stage of the
competition and E. Stalev from Russia refused to play the qualifications and
did not show in the Olympic Hall in Moscow which offers 34,000 seats.
The bronze medals went to
the host country (V. Petushkov and another Russian player).
