The Weert Open 9-Ball were organized House of Billiards. The Dutch
promoters could welcome more than 300 participants from all over Europe,
proving that this tournament has gained a great reputation.
I played my qualifying group on Friday and won the opening match against
B. Urselmann (NED) 6-1. I also won the second match against J. Segura (NED)
6-3. I round three, I had a more or less easy win over the Dutchman I.
Derolur 6-2. In the next match, one of the top players was waiting for me.
I could control my Mosconi Cup team mate N. van den Berg (NED) and entered
the final round of the last 32 players on Sunday by winning 6-3.
On Saturday, we played a 14-1 competition with 16 participants in a direct
KO bracket. I didn’t remain for long in the competition and lost already
in the first round to my former team mate from Dessau, A. Roschkowsky
11-100. He in turn lost his next match clearly against 9-Ball World
Champion T. Hohmann. In the semi-finals, Hohmann lost –1:100 against the
current European Champion in this discipline N. Feijen from Holland. The
final was played between M. Lanoye (BEL) and N. Feijen, and the European
champion won 150-60.
On Sunday, the 9-Ball competition resumed. The format was now a single KO
bracket in races to 8, and this number was then increased. The draw made
me play against Dutchman G. Smit and this was my final station. During the
last competitions on European soil, I had played him several times and
always won, but this time, I lost 6-8 and had to make do with a 17th
rank.
However, the tournament turned out to be a German event. In the
semi-finals, O. Ortmann defeated C. Reimering (9-2) and T. Hohmann lost to
M. Schmidt (5-9).
In the final, Ortmann won against his former team mate from Oberhausen and
Anderten 10-7 and won once more a title in the Netherlands.
