NEWS - November 11, 2003 - World Continental Team Cup – Gold & Bronze for Europe

8 teams competed at this year’s World Continental Team Cup in Taoyuan / Taiwan. For the first time, two Asian teams had been compiled with players from the Philippines, Korea and Japan. Two teams from Chinese Taipei and Canada, the USA and two European selections. Team Europe A with O. Ortmann (GER), T. Hohmann (GER), T. Storm (SWE), S. Ortner (GER) and K. Corr (IRE) won two of their three first round matches in group B and so qualified as the group winner for the semi-finals.

Europa  – Chinese Taipei 3-2

Team Europe A made better use of the opportunities and entered the final with a tight 3-2 vs. team Chinese Taipei. In the decisive single between T. Storm and K.F. Lee, the Swedish player was already leading 6-3, but then missed a good opportunity to win the match. The player from Taiwan made use of this little weakness and could equal the score at 6-6. At his last break, he potted three balls, but somehow the cue ball ended up in a pocket. Storm didn’t hesitate and brought his team in the final – against team Asia B.

  Bustamante scored the first point for his team against Hohmann 7-1. Corr tied the score by defeating Takagi 7-2. Storm / Corr won the first double against Bustamante / Kim. The next double decided already the match. Ortmann / Ortner won 7-5 against Park / Takagi and could bring back the World Continental Team Cup to Europe after 2001. The winning team also received a cheque for US$ 35,000.
